In 1996, Scott Whipple and John Gordon were working in a pet food and feed store in San Luis Obispo, California. Frustrated by the ingredient quality of the brands they were selling, they started making their own dog food and delivering it to local shops from the back of a pickup truck. That scrappy two-man operation became Canidae — a name derived from the Latin taxonomic family that includes dogs, wolves, and foxes. For over a decade, Canidae outsourced production to Diamond Pet Foods in South Carolina. Then in 2012, the company opened the Ethos Pet Nutrition plant in Brownwood, Texas — a deliberately small-batch facility that produces over 90% of Canidae's dry food in-house. In 2016, Canidae went even further and launched its own farm in Kansas, becoming the first pet food company to grow its own ingredients, including peas, millet, milo, rosemary, and greenhouse tomatoes. Private equity firm L Catterton invested in the company, and in 2023 Canidae merged with Natural Balance to form Ethos Pet Brands — but the Brownwood plant, the Kansas farm, and the founding team's involvement remain intact.
Many pet food brands mention sustainability in passing. Canidae has made it a structural commitment. Since 2018, the company has partnered exclusively with farmers who practise regenerative agriculture — frequent crop rotations, precision fertiliser dosing, herbicide reduction, and cover cropping between cash crops. Canidae also partnered with Greenfield Robotics, a startup that uses autonomous robots to eliminate chemical herbicide use on farmland. The company's Brownwood facility is a member of the Pet Sustainability Coalition, and its packaging incorporates recycled materials. In select US states, Canidae even operates Kibble Refill Stations where customers can refill bags instead of buying new ones. Whether this matters more than what is in the actual food is a fair question — but for environmentally conscious pet owners, no other brand at this price point invests as heavily in where and how its ingredients are grown.
Canidae organises its dog and cat food into several lines, all sharing a common standard: real meat first, no fillers, no artificial flavours or preservatives, and vet-reviewed formulation.
Canidae's safety record is among the cleanest in premium pet food. The brand's only recall — a 2012 voluntary precautionary action — was triggered by a concern at Diamond's third-party facility, not by any confirmed contamination in Canidae products. The subsequent decision to build the Ethos plant and bring manufacturing in-house was a direct response to that vulnerability, and no recalls have occurred in the 14 years since. Dog Food Advisor awards 5 stars to both the All Life Stages and PURE lines. The trade-offs are worth noting: some wet food is co-manufactured, with certain recipes produced in Thailand rather than Texas — check the back of the can if domestic sourcing matters to you. The L Catterton investment and Natural Balance merger also mean Canidae is no longer the scrappy independent it once was, though it remains far smaller and more vertically integrated than Mars or Nestlé brands. For pet owners who care about ingredient sourcing, environmental impact, and in-house manufacturing — and want all three without paying ultra-premium prices — Canidae is one of the most credible options in pet specialty retail.
