Nutro is one of the oldest pet food brands in America, tracing its roots to a fox farm in 1930s California. Now a Mars, Inc. subsidiary, it follows a "Feed Clean" philosophy — non-GMO ingredients, no artificial additives, and simple, recognisable recipes for dogs and cats

Fox Farmers, a Car Racer, and a Billion-Dollar Kibble

Nutro's origin story reads like a family saga. In 1926, a man named Herben Serois started a small pet food company called the Nutro Dog Food Company in Santa Monica, California, and trademarked the name in 1936. Meanwhile, three brothers — John, Herman, and Albert Saleen — were running a fox farm nearby, making their own fox feed and distributing wet dog food through Kal Kan. When Serois died in 1942, the Saleen brothers saw an opportunity: John purchased the Nutro business in 1947 and acquired the trademark in 1952, merging the two operations under one name. For decades, John ran Nutro as a small, family-owned California pet food company. His son Stephen joined after graduating from USC in 1971, designed the Nutro logo still recognisable today, and built the brand's first real marketing strategy. But Stephen's true passion was cars, not kibble — in 1983 he left to found Saleen Autosport, a high-performance muscle car company. Realising none of his children would carry on the business, John sold Nutro to friend and colleague Ed Brown in 1975. Brown and his team grew the company steadily, and in 1985, partnered with veterinary nutritionist Dr. Sharon Machlik to create the Max line — Nutro's first premium kibble using chicken, lamb, and rice. Mars, Incorporated acquired Nutro in 2007, making it a sibling brand to Pedigree, Royal Canin, and IAMS within the Mars Petcare family.

The "Feed Clean" Philosophy

Under Mars ownership, Nutro has carved out a clear identity in the crowded mid-premium market through its "Feed Clean" positioning. In practice, this means every recipe uses non-GMO ingredients, real animal protein as the first ingredient, and no corn, wheat, soy, chicken by-product meal, artificial colours, flavours, or preservatives. Ingredient lists are deliberately kept short and recognisable — a typical Nutro dry food will list deboned chicken or lamb, followed by whole brown rice, chicken meal, split peas, and chicken fat, with minimal filler. The brand also runs the Greater Ground initiative, a sustainability programme focused on sourcing from farms that practise regenerative soil health — a rare environmental commitment for a mid-range pet food brand. It is not organic or human-grade, but Nutro positions itself as the cleanest label you can get without stepping into ultra-premium pricing.

Three Lines, One Clean-Label Promise

Nutro organises its dog and cat food into three core lines, each serving a different role but sharing the same ingredient standards. Wholesome Essentials is the everyday foundation — grain-inclusive recipes with real meat first, available for puppies, adults, seniors, and multiple breed sizes. It is the line most directly competing with Wellness Complete Health and Blue Buffalo Life Protection at a slightly lower price. Ultra is the premium tier, built around a "superfood plate" concept that combines multiple animal proteins — like chicken, lamb, and salmon — in a single recipe, alongside a curated blend of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. And for cats, Nutro offers a parallel range with both indoor and weight-management formulas. The brand previously sold a grain-free Wild Frontier line and the high-protein Crave sub-brand, but both have been quietly phased out in recent years — likely a response to the FDA's DCM investigation dampening demand for grain-free products and a corporate decision to simplify the portfolio.

Recalls, Mars, and What You Should Know

Nutro's recall history is longer than most natural brands, partly because it has been around for nearly a century. Notable incidents include a 2007 recall during the industry-wide melamine contamination crisis, a 2009 voluntary retrieval of certain puppy food bags after melted plastic was found in a production run, a 2015 recall over possible mould in dog treats sold at PetSmart, and a 2024 recall of select wet food cans. None were catastrophic, but the pattern suggests that Mars's large-scale manufacturing network — while efficient — occasionally produces quality control lapses. The bigger question for some buyers is philosophical: can a brand owned by the same corporation behind Pedigree and Kal Kan truly be "clean"? Nutro's answer is that Mars provides scale and resources while the Nutro team maintains independent formulation decisions. Whether you find that convincing is personal, but the ingredient lists speak for themselves — they are genuinely cleaner than most mass-market competitors. For pet owners who want recognisable, non-GMO ingredients and no artificial anything, but cannot justify ultra-premium prices, Nutro is one of the most honest options on the shelf.
